Fuego Volcano Erupts In Guatemala
The Fuego Volcano, in southern Guatemala, erupted Saturday, saturating the sky with black ash and propelling debris into nearby towns. Guatemalan President Otto Perez says the government evacuated around 100 local residents and closed the international airport in Guatemala City.
Even though only a moderate amount of ash is falling, officials say people in the area should wear a mask or a wet cloth to prevent breathing in toxic contaminants. Social-media users from the city of Antigua Guatemala shared photos of their streets covered in ash using the hashtags #volcándefuego and #AntiguaGuatemala.
