Drones Are Speeding Up Airplane Inspections

Inspecting the outside of massive airplanes like the Airbus A380 superjumbo can take hours.

But hey, we have drones now. Drones solve problems like this 100 times before you wake up in the morning. Drones will make it all okay.

Airbus now wants to use drones to reduce inspection times and get those giant hunks of metal back where they belong—hurtling madly through the air above our heads at more than 600 miles an hour.

A drone can inspect an A380 aircraft in just 10-15 minutes. In this time, the drone takes over one hundred photos of the aircraft. These are then compiled onto a model which inspectors pore over in detail on a screen that’s straight out of Minority Report. It probably can’t tell if a plane will commit a crime in the future, though, because Minority Report was just a movie and not real li…. WOAH

Airbus hopes to finish testing the drones by the end of the year. I for one welcome our robot inspection overlords.
