The race, 24 Hours of Lemons” is a spoof of the annual 24 Hours of Le Mans, a famous French endurance car race. The major difference—besides the crowd—is that in Lemons, teams must spend less than $500 on their cars in order to compete. Hence: The clunkers. In the eight years since it’s been founded, it’s become a subcultural hit. Thousands participate each year to take part in the weekend fun. We sent Eric Markowitz to join a team and race. Thankfully, he made it back alive.
