Poll: Voters Trust Comey More Than Trump

Less than a week following his sworn testimony in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee, voters trust former FBI Director James Comey more than President Donald Trump, according to a new poll.

The results, which were a part of a Politico/Morning Consult poll released on Wednesday, found that 45 percent of voters said they trust Comey more to tell the truth, dwarfing the 32 percent who preferred Trump. Another 23 percent have no opinion on the question.

The findings come after Comey’s testimony about his personal interactions with the president. Despite voters in the Politico poll indicating by a two-to-one margin that Comey’s statements have hurt the president, Trump has maintained that he feels vindicated by the former FBI director’s testimony.

But even with the Comey testimony, the Republican base remains supportive of the president, with 81 percent of GOP voters polled by Politico saying they approve of Trump’s performance. That is much higher than the feelings among Democrats and independents, who come in at 16 percent and 39 percent, respectively.

On Monday, the latest Gallup poll found that Trump had hit his lowest approval and highest disapproval ratings to date. The Comey testimony, as well as fallout from Trump’s decision to back out of the Paris climate agreement, brought his approval rating down to 37 percent, while his disapproval rating climbed to 58 percent.
