If it’s good enough for the internet’s front page, it’s good enough for House Republicans. The House Oversight Committee and the Science Committee are currently using a Reddit-based investigation to track down the writer of a Reddit post — which they think might be evidence Hillary Clinton destroyed emails while she was under subpoena.

The investigations are related to a Reddit post possibly written by Paul Combetta, who worked with Platte River Networks, a Colorado company that ran Hillary Clinton’s private email server while she was Secretary of State. In the post, the user asks for help changing “VERY VIP” emails.

The message was posted July 24, 2014, the day after the State Department finished an agreement with the Benghazi committee to hand over records.

The username on that post is stonetear. According to The Hill, Reddit users discovered an Etsy account for a Paul Combetta also featuring the username stonetear as well as a website for that registered to

The evidence is circumstantial but it’s enough to provoke the attention of the two committees.

In a letter on September 19 to Platte River Networks’ lawyer, Lamar Smith, Chairman of the Science Committee writes, “If true, these details raise new question as to whether Platte River Networks purposefully defied legal document retention requirements.” The letter goes on to request that Combetta give a transcribed interview by the September 23 or potentially face a subpoena.

The new accusation come after a long series of partisan hearings and even the FBI finding that Hillary Clinton has not done anything to warrant being charged with any crime. Hillary and Bill Clinton have been the target of partisan investigations that have gone nowhere for decades.

But, there will be some irony if the allegations are proven true. Reddit has a troubled track record of crowd-sourcing investigations. In the case of the Boston Marathon bombing, Reddit cyber sleuths’ faulty efforts made innocent people fear for their safety. Reddit is a magnet for conspiracy theorists and theories, whether about the Sandy Hook Shooting or the Orlando shooting. Stonetear’s account is archived currently on Reddit’s conspiracy page.
