In China, a new beauty trend is going viral: The next step in the evolution of nail art is the “Little Monkey Manicure.” Makes sense — Chinese New Year was celebrated last Monday and this year’s Zodiac animal is the monkey.

“Little Monkey Manicure” is now one of the most discussed topics on Weibo, China’s main social networking site. The topic garnered over 6.23 million readers and sparked more than 7,700 discussions on Weibo over the past week, and the obsession has continued to explode over the weekend.

The frenzied interest could have significant economic implications.

China’s cosmetics industry is one of the biggest in the world, reports The Economist, with a total worth of almost $86 billion every year. Even the West has caught on to the monkey nail art trend, trickling onto platforms like Instagram. “Like many bloggers, I’m celebrating Chinese New Year on the blog today with a little nail art,” wrote Angela, a beauty blogger in Vancouver.
