Star Wars Fans Are Obsessed With Jar Jar Binks

Villains get off easy when it comes to likability in the Star Wars universe. However, the concept of Jar Jar Binks, a computer animated alien sidekick meant to bring comic relief to Episode I: The Phantom Menace, completely backfired when viewers found him to be incredibly annoying, one-dimensional, and in some cases, an offensive racial caricature. Since 1999 Jar Jar has been the butt of Star Wars jokes and is consistently ranked as one of the least-favorite characters from the series, well below Emperor Palpatine (who is pretty horrible).

And yet, Jar Jar’s notoriety keeps him relevant in pop culture. For a character that hasn’t been seen since his Episode III: Revenge of the Sith one-liner, he still manages to resurface when talk of Star Wars comes about; most recently he’s been the star of a fan theory linking him to Supreme Leader Snoke in The Force Awakens. 


The latest incident of fan trolling comes with #BadStarWars8Names. Jar Jar appears in an overwhelming number of tweets linked to the hashtag, which began trending Tuesday afternoon. Vocativ collected alternative titles that best showcased the love/hate relationship society has with Mr. Binks:
