Nokia’s Dumb Phones Are Apparently Still Sexy — As Vibrators

While the smartphones on sale today were designed to be more sleek and sexy than their ancestral “dumb phones,” a survey by one online publication in India reveals one surprising advantage of Nokia’s older phones. With its unusually strong vibration function, Nokia phones are being used as vibrators by what would appear to be a not insignificant number of women.

The survey of just 100 respondents focused on the masturbation habits of women.  Though Agents of Ishq was exceptionally vague in its results reporting and methodology, the blog post noted that “the old Nokia vibrating phone made several appearances on this survey!” According to Quartz reporter Harish C. Menon, vibrators aren’t easy to come by in India, which could explain the reason for this substitution. In addition to Nokia phones, many women reported using toothbrushes and bottles.

A cursory look through tweets posted prior to the survey’s results being widely-circulated confirmed that this application is not unique to women in India, either.

I know a woman who used her Nokia 3310 as a Vibrator. It does a much better job.

Nokia has not yet responded to Vocativ’s inquiry into the reason for its phones’ legendarily strong vibration motors and their thoughts on this unintended use.
