Reddit’s /r/UplifitingNews subreddit, which focuses on inspirational news stories from around the world, is working to raise thousands of dollars to benefit a young man with special needs who was kidnapped and tortured by a group of teenagers in Chicago.

A group of four teenagers recorded themselves live on Facebook beating, and at one point cutting with a knife, the man in a Chicago home. Police later arrested the suspects who appear in the video.

One of the Reddit community’s moderators put out a call to action late on Wednesday, saying that the fundraiser was intended to prove to the victim “that there is far more good in this world than the evil he recently endured.”

As of Thursday morning, the fundraiser, hosted on GoFundMe, had accumulated more than half of its $5,000 goal within seven hours. The subreddit has held several similar fundraisers in the past, raising money for a man who cut a hole in his own truck to rescue a trapped kitten, an outdoor gym in South Africa, and a father who sold his valuable comic collection to pay the medical costs of his adopted baby.

Chicago police stated on Thursday morning that they did not believe that the assault, carried out by four African-American teens against the white victim, was racially motivated. The police spokesperson told reporters that it is possible the victim was targeted due to his mental disabilities, but they are still investigating.
