Vivid Debuts Virtual Reality Kim Kardashian Sex Tape

The porn giant premieres its VR website with a 3D video featuring Kim K — and a porn star lookalike

At the foot of the bed there is a big flat-screen TV playing Kim Kardashian’s sex tape. There she is in a white robe, smooching on then-boyfriend Ray-J in footage viewed before by millions of people — but, before you know it, she is climbing out of the TV and onto the bed. “Hi there, I like your room,” she says. “I know you bought the video because you wanna see me. Why don’t we just play here?”

This is “Kim Kardashian Superstar VR Experience,” a video that debuted Monday on Vivid Entertainment’s new virtual reality porn website. The 3D, 360-degree video, which is meant to be played on a VR headset, imagines the viewer at home watching Kardashian’s sex tape. Then, through some indiscernible kind of magic, Kardashian transports herself through the television. Only, it’s not Kardashian who emerges from the screen at all, but rather a porn star who looks vaguely like her. She then begins to writhe on the bed, talking about how hot it is to watch herself on screen — all of which culminates in a session with a sex toy.

The brave new world of VR porn is here and, at least in this case, it looks super meta. Sex tapes about sex tapes!

More Here’s What It’s Like To Binge On Virtual Reality Porn

The timing of the video’s release is interesting — or, one might say, inappropriate — given Kardashian was robbed at gunpoint earlier this month in Paris. She has intentionally stepped out of the spotlight in the weeks since the assault (and, if the tabloids are to be trusted at all, she’s suffering from PTSD and building a $100,000 panic room). Add to that the fact that Vivid’s VR website highlights that the tape “was never supposed to see the light of day.” It all makes this video release feel like yet another example of the world wanting, and taking, from Kardashian.

Of course, we don’t know whether Kardashian approved the release of this VR re-make or, for that matter, if she could stand to profit from this video. Vivid told Vocativ that the “terms of all of our deals are confidential and so we can’t comment on them.” A representative for Kardashian did not respond to a request by press time. There have been reports of both a hefty purchase price and royalties for the original sex tape, as well as rumors about how it was leaked in the first place. But regardless of the behind-the-scenes reality here, there is the marketing of the video, which is meant to create a certain fantasy for the viewer — and that fantasy is largely one of access to Kardashian regardless of her wish to be accessed.

More Behind The Scenes Of Porn’s Virtual Reality Experiment

The press release promises the VR video will “enable fans to feel an unprecedented intimate connection with one of the most celebrated pop culture figures of the era.” On the Vivid VR website, the video description reads, “This virtual experience gives you your first chance to see what it would be like to make your own personal home video with the reality celebutante, Miss Kim Kardashian. She comes right out of her famous home video with Ray J to have some fun with you.”

From the phenomenon of leaked sex tapes to Photoshopped fake porn featuring stars like Kardashian herself, technology has introduced many ways of bringing fantasies closer to reality, sometimes nonconsensually. That’s perhaps especially true when it comes to celebrities, whom many already feel much entitlement toward. As Vivid’s entrance into this new medium shows, virtual reality represents a whole new degree of fantasy fulfillment — and this is just the start. It’s not too hard to imagine a future in which the leaked sex tape of yore is replaced by VR sex with digitally engineered celebrities.

But, for now, it’s just lookalikes climbing out of TV screens.
