Dejected Donald Trump supporters seethed on Tuesday after Wikileaks failed to deliver a promised death blow to Hillary Clinton during one of the most overhyped press conferences of the presidential campaign.

Die-hard fans of the Republican nominee stayed up until the wee hours of the morning to witness the anti-secrecy organization — which published hacked Democratic National Committee emails earlier this summer — drop a bombshell on his rival. Instead, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange spent an hour cataloguing his group’s prominent releases of information over the last decade and plugging the sale of a WikiLeaks books.

Trump’s bleary-eyed enthusiasts were, predictably, pissed off. “Thanks for the blueballs, @wikileaks. It’s not like I needed sleep tonight or anything,” fumed one fan on social media, echoing a feeling shared by those inhabiting Trump’s vast Twitterverse and Reddit community.

Many had spent weeks tantalized by the prospect of a so-called October Surprise from Wikileaks that would irreparably damage Clinton’s shot at the White House. Conservative outlets, including the Drudge Report and Alex Jones’ InfoWars, fueled the speculation, whipping the excitement into a fever pitch. Trump ally Roger Stone unleashed a frenzy on social media when he proclaimed: “Wednesday@HillaryClinton is done. #Wikileaks.”

The anticipation was palpable.

But the promised fairy-tale ending never emerged. In fact, Assange openly dismissed the idea that his organization had information that would destroy Hillary Clinton. He even took a sly swipe at Trump, who recently drew scorn for a recent Twitter tirade unleashed in the middle of the night. “If we are going to make a major publication, we don’t do it at 3 a.m.” in the United States, he said.

So what the hell happened? The collective consensus: Trump fans were #Wikirolled by Assange, naturally.
