There Was My Little Pony Porn Hanging Around iOS 10

Apple, a company that prides itself on a porn-free experience, left one corner of iMessage unchecked

iOS 10 touched down on Tuesday, bringing with it all kinds of new features to the iPhone: new emojis, the ability to delete those dumb stock apps, and oh yeah, My Little Pony porn hiding in plain sight. You’re gonna love Apple’s most Brony-friendly operating system ever.

Deadspin was the first to discover that when you run certain GIF searches on the default keyboard in Messages, you’ll find some, dare we say… surprises. Up until this morning, searching “butt” generated some NSFW surprise that would scar anyone who loves “My Little Pony” in a pure, unadulterated way.

Apple appears to be pulling its results from Microsoft’s Bing search engine, and since the Deadspin story ran last night, it seems like the company started cleaning up the results. (There are currently no search results for “butt.”)  But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some other oddities.

Vocativ did a few cursory searches of our own to see what else might be hiding within the GIF keyboard. “Boobs/boob,” “ass,” “fuck,” and “doggystyle” don’t come up with anything. But if you searching “missionary” and “mlp butt” dredged up some pornographic images.

Some words related to various fetish communities will get you results, too. You’ll get porn if you search “yiffing,” which a colleague tells me is a word for having relations with a stuffed animal or someone in an animal suit. (Read: furries). Search “bad dragon”? You’ll get dragon dicks. “Leather daddy,” however, produces with nothing.

If it were any other company, this wouldn’t be as much of a surprise. But Apple is a company that has taken a psychotic sort of pride in its puritanical approach to content censorship. To see this pop up was unexpected to say the least.

More The Slack Phrase That Accidentally Sent My Coworkers Porn

This isn’t the only time NSFW images have circumvented the filtering process. Last month, Vocativ found that Giphy — another company which prides itself on its porn-free cache of GIFs — had a stash of porn that, unbeknownst to Giphy, surfaced when you search “interracial.” (For the record, “interracial” yields no porn in iOS 10.)

Apple will probably have all of this cleared up quickly, but in the meantime, enjoy your porn, pony nerds!
