Daughter Sues Parents For Posting ‘Embarrassing’ Photos
"I'm tired of not being taken seriously by my parents."
A young woman in Austria is lawyering up and waging a legal battle against her parents after they refused to remove hundreds of allegedly embarrassing photos of her taken as a little girl and posted to Facebook, according to reports.
The livid 18-year-old said her mother and father made her life a living hell after sharing more than 500 snapshots of her with their friends on social media without her consent. The woman’s parents have since declined to delete the photos despite repeated requests from their daughter.
“They knew no shame and no limit, and didn’t care whether it was a picture of me sitting on the toilet or lying naked in my cot,” fumed the unnamed litigant, who lives in the southern state of Carinthia, in an interview with The Local. “Every stage was photographed and then made public.”
The daughter continued: “I’m tired of not being taken seriously by my parents.”
Perhaps they will now. She has reportedly hired Michael Rami, a prominent Austrian lawyer, to represent her in a lawsuit against her parents, whose names were also not published by The Local. According to the report, the woman’s father believes that since he took the photos, he has the right to share them as he pleases.
Rami, who did not respond to an interview request by Vocativ on Wednesday, told The Local that his client’s parents will lose the case if he can prove the images violated their daughter’s personal life. The case will be the first of its kind in Austria and could set a legal precedent for parents in that country who post images of their children on social media without their consent.
The court case is expected to proceed in November.
