Facebook Activates Safety Check For The First Time In The U.S.
It's the 21st time the social media platform has used the measure overall
After the terrorist attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando that claimed 50 lives, including the shooter’s, Facebook activated its Safety Check feature in the U.S. for the first time.
Originally created in 2014 to allow users to assure their friends they were safe if they were in an area where a natural disaster hit, the feature has been used sporadically for 21 catastrophes around the world. It’s been deployed over a terrorist attack six times to date, beginning with the Paris attacks in November 2015 that killed 137.
