Bio Artist Grows A Sculpture Out Of Bone

Jun 13, 2016 at 1:04 PM ET

Half science, half art, and 100 percent creepy-cool: a “bio artist” by the name of Amy Karle is growing a sculpture made of bone.

Karle and three other researchers achieve this by implanting stem cells onto a scaffold that dissolves. Once that’s out of the way, what’s left is bone that will continue to grow. Work on the gnarly project was done as part of Autodesk’s Artists in Residence program at Pier 9.

Like Thing from The Addams Family, but less prolific at fetching the mail. For now!

[Note: This post previously omitted the program sponsoring this piece of Amy Karle’s work. It has been edited since publication to include that information.]
