Thousands Tortured And Killed In Indian “Witch Hunts”
If you’re poor and a woman in certain parts of rural India, daily life can be hard enough. But for thousands of women there is an additional burden: the fear of being branded a “witch”.
In the last 14 years, according to several reports, more than 2,000 women have been tortured and killed on suspicion of being witches–blamed for everything from a bad crop to a child’s illness. Rumor and superstition often drive the witch hunts but some times there are more sinister motives at work.
Vocativ recently met up with some women who have been branded witches and are trying to do something about it.
