Life under the law of ISIS is, shall we say, unforgiving. Even the most petty crimes can draw some violent responses. Murder, crucifixion, mutilation, stoning and other forms of punishment are doled out liberally across Syrian and Iraqi territories controlled by the Islamic State. ISIS followers on Twitter and on the terror group’s online forum have begun circulating what seems to be ISIS’ new official penal code, which is heavily based on Sharia law. The document, allegedly being circulated in Syria’s Aleppo province, is short on detail, but big on consequences. It lists the penalties and punishments imposed for a selection of crimes against Islam and society in general:

- Cursing Allah—death penalty.
- Cursing the Prophet Muhammad—death penalty.
- Cursing Islam—death penalty.
- Illegal sexual intercourse—stoning to death for a married offender; 100 lashes for non-married offender and banishment for one year.
- Sodomy—death for both the receiver and the giver.
- Theft—amputation of a limb.
- Alcohol consumption—80 lashes.
- False accusation of illegal sexual intercourse—80 lashes.
- Spying for the infidel interests—death penalty.
- Apostasy from Islam—death penalty.
- Highway robbery—crucifixion and killing for those who killed and stole money, killing for those who killed, amputation of the right hand and the left foot for those who stole money, banishing for those who horrified people.
If the consequences weren’t so dire, the broad scale of crimes attracting the death penalty might almost seem farcical. There is plenty of evidence to show that the group is implementing these punishments in real life, and Islamic State supporters are certainly not shy about publishing them online.
