Kenya’s Notorious Police Force Shoots First and Investigates Later
Police brutality is a concern everywhere. Think Ferguson, Missouri. But we’ve never seen quite what we found in Nairobi, Kenya. The nation’s police force is regarded as one of the most corrupt public institutions in East Africa, according to Transparency International. Worse than that, they are accused of being trigger happy in administering justice. A UN report released in 2009 said the police “frequently execute” people, and a local human rights group, Independent Medico-Legal Unit, claims to have documented more than 170 of these execution-style shootings this year alone.
