Democrats End Livestreamed House Floor Protest

Jun 23, 2016 at 5:47 PM ET

After promising to continue their House floor sit-in until Speaker Paul Ryan allowed a vote on gun control measures, congressional Democrats ended their protest on Thursday without a vote.

Critics of the protest, like the aforementioned Speaker Ryan, accused the Democrats of pulling a “publicity stunt.” Supporters watched raptly as their representatives tweeted, Periscoped, and used Facebook Live to broadcast their protest after the House GOP turned the cameras that normally broadcast chamber goings-on off. The effort was spearheaded by civil rights leader and Georgia congressman John Lewis. Participants have promised that their gun control efforts aren’t over.
