O Little Town Of Selfies: Images From Christmas in Bethlehem
People from around the world celebrated Christmas in the place where Jesus is believed to have been born
Bethlehem is the star of many a Christmas carol, but what is the location actually like during Christmas now? Well, it’s as festive and as bright as the lights used to decorate the tree in front of the Church of the Nativity, which stands on the site where many believe Christ was born. Images reveal large crowds gathered for Midnight Mass in Manger Square, and visitors commemorated their experience with pictures in and in front of this historic landmark.
The tradition of Midnight Mass is less about the time people think Jesus may have been born, and more about keeping vigil during this holy event. Vocativ used our technology to geo-fence Instagram posts from in and around Bethlehem and the Church of the Nativity to locate the best photos being taken throughout Christmas Eve and Midnight Mass.
Merry Christmas from the Holy Land. Experiencing Midnight mass at the Church of Nativity in Bethlehem last night was as surreal as it gets. The top picture is Manger Square in Bethlehem, a stunning sight to see. Bottom left is inside St. Catherine’s, a once in a lifetime experience. And the bottom right, well, no explanation necessary, “he came” ha. Being away from our families for the holidays is never easy, but @_marisaj always makes them so special.
