“Rollin’ Coal” Is Pollution Porn for Dudes With Pickup Trucks

Diesel drivers in rural America have been modifying their trucks to spew out black soot, then posting pics to the Internet. They hate you and your Prius

In small towns across America, manly men are customizing their jacked-up diesel trucks to intentionally emit giant plumes of toxic smoke every time they rev their engines. They call it “rollin’ coal,” and it’s something they do for fun.

An entire subculture has emerged on the Internet surrounding this soot-spewing pastime—where self-declared rednecks gather on Facebook pages (16,000 collective followers) Tumblers and Instagram (156,714 posts) to share photos and videos of their Dodge Rams and GM Silverados purposefully poisoning the sky. As one of their memes reads: “Roll, roll, rollin’ coal, let the hybrid see. A big black cloud. Exhaust that’s loud. Watch the city boy flee.”

Of course, there are things about diesel lovers and their trucks that the rest of us weren’t meant to understand. Like how the guttural noise of a grumbling engine sounds like music when the muffler is removed. Or how the higher the lift and the bigger the tires—the better the man. As Robbie, a 25-year-old mechanic at a diesel garage in South Carolina, puts it, “Your truck is not just something to get you from point A to point B. It’s who you are.” In other words, mushrooming clouds of diesel exhaust are just another way to show off your manhood.

Robbie has been rollin’ coal since he got his first truck 12 years ago, but he admits the allure is “kind of hard to put words on.” “It’s just fun,” he says. “Just driving and blowing smoke and having a good time.”

The pollution pageantry has its origins in Truck Pulls, a rural motorsport where diesel pickups challenge one another to see who can pull a weighted sled the farthest. In order to have an edge, drivers started modifying their trucks to dump excessive fuel into the motor, which gave them more horsepower, torque, speed and a better chance of winning. It also made their trucks emit black smoke, an affectation that apparently won the hearts of country boys everywhere. Today kids will spend anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 modifying their pickups for this sole purpose; adding smoke stacks and smoke switches (which trick the engine into thinking it needs more gas), or even revamping the entire fuel system.

Aside from being macho, the rollin’ coal culture is also a renegade one. Kids make a point of blowing smoke back at pedestrians, in addition to cop cars and rice burners (Japanese-made sedans), which can make it dangerously difficult to see out of the windshield. Diesel soot can also be a great road rage weapon should some wimpy looking Honda Civic ever piss you off. “If someone makes you mad, you can just roll coal, and it makes you feel better sometimes,” says Ryan, a high school senior who works at the diesel garage with Robbie. “The other day I did it to this kid who was driving a Mustang with his windows down, and it was awesome.”

The ultimate highway enemy, however, are “nature nuffies,” or people who drive hybrid cars, because apparently, pro-earth sentiment is an offense to the diesel-trucking lifestyle. “The feeling around here is that everyone who drives a small car is a liberal,” says Ryan. “I rolled coal on a Prius once just because they were tailing me.”

Instagram

According to the Clean Air Taskforce, diesel exhaust is one of the country’s greatest sources of toxic pollutants and leads to 21,000 premature deaths each year, but even that won’t deter the coal rollers. “I’m not a scientist, but it couldn’t be too horrible,” Robbie says. “There are a lot of factories that are doing way worse than my truck.”

It should be said that not all diesel drivers roll coal. Older enthusiasts call it a waste of fuel and think it gives their kind a bad name, but like a tobacco habit, the younger set are willing to overlook the risks. “It’s bad for the environment. That’s definitely true,” says Ryan. “And some of the kids that have diesel trucks can look like tools. And you can cause a wreck, but everything else about it is pretty good.”

  • Wow, amazing blog layout! How long have you ever been running a blog for? you make blogging look easy. The overall glance of your website is great, as smartly as the content!

  • Hi colleagues, nice piece of writing and pleasant arguments commented here, I am actually enjoying by these.

  • Asking questions are in fact good thing if you are not understanding anything entirely, however this post provides good understanding even.

  • This is exactly what makes so many pepople around the world to hate americans. While this isn’t my case I kind of feel sorry.

  • Funny how no where in this article it says that when you change your truck to be able to do this it also can give the truck up to 30% better fuel economy.. The article seems a little one sided to me.

    • Nope. Not this kind of modification, which is basically wasting fuel for greater pull power. While it is true that diesel engines are most efficient when running nearly at the point at which they would output visible smoke (not anywhere at that thickness, by the way – that’s a safety hazard), you cannot tune an engine to do this – you’d need to actually design the engine around running at that power level. The reduction in fuel efficiency has something to do with the technologies used to reduce particle matter as well as the fuel/air ratio.

  • It’s this kind of endless stupidity that gives US a bad name internationally. Imagine now and then reading stuff like this about another country. What would you think about them?

  • “…and it can cause a wreck…” There is nothing “good” about causing other innocent humans harm or death in order to appear masculine, make a statement, or win a road rage argument. Anyone who has modified their truck in this way and uses it on public roads should be fined, and if it causes a wreck, should be held accountable the same as drunk/reckless drivers including massive fines, mandatory driving safety courses, responsibility for all damage, and prison time. You are all puny, useless little boys.

  • I’d like to compare this pollution from these trucks to al gore flying around in a 707 and living in a 20,000 sq ft mansion.  Or how much pollution is produced whenever obama takes off on one of his endless taxpayer funded junkets/vacations, especially when he has michele leave on a separate flight a half-day later.btw – you forgot to mention the Ford Powerstroke diesel.

    • Depends on what pollution you’re looking at – avfuel generates very little particulate matter when burned properly – and particulate matter tends to cause health issues, not CO2. Go to a third world country without emissions control, and try breathing the air – it won’t be pleasant for an extended period of time for that reason.

  • i just want you all to know that alot of these trucks used in this “act against diesels” are rarely street driven trucks. i,ve personally seen a few of these trucks at local sled pulling competitions which is a sport much like drag racing or supercross or any other motor sport. a sport that has rules and regulations and takes place off road at local fairgrounds all across the nation. like the white ford with the dual stack at the top of this page, i look closly you can see that he is on a drag strip. the old black dodge with the exhaust comming out of the hood is a guy from idaho who participates in sled pulling competitions. for aevery one who doesn’t know anything about diesels… virtually every diesel has one or several turbo chargers, turbo’s use heat from the exhaust to increase the amount of air and pressure of that air to feed the engine, draw back is with the more air and pressure you want the bigger the turbo needs to be, the bigger the turbo the longer it takes to heat up, the way to get a diesel to brovide all the heat is to put the engine under a load, the amount of load differs on the engine set up. So, at first you see this big black cload or unburnt fuel but once the turbo has pressureised the intake, all that fuel that is injected into the engine is combusted properly making massive amount of power. alot of gas motors are turbocharger and they follow the same principle, oly difference is that the air and fuel are mixed in the intake runners or the cylinders them selves, and ignited from a spark plug, where as a diesel builds combustion and heat from compressed air in the cylinders alone and the injectect fuel to start the combustion process, alot of these diesel idiots are plain and simply pouring fuel and not enough air into there truck because they think its cool or funny(or they think they are fighting obama or the epa or what every silly bullshit people come up with). target the idiots not the the guy who  drives his diesel to work every day.

  • So, you’ll go around nearly causing road accidents to innocent people because someone suggested that pollution might not be a good thing.Cops should impound their trucks and make these idiots ride a bicycle before they kill someone!

  • fly them into china beijing and let them enjoy that filthy air and smog. that’s the only way they will learn what air pollution does to a society/country. this is the only way 4th generation inbreds can learn.

  • I’m all for those who want to do this doing it…. in and enclosed space while breathing deeply.

  • This is not an assault or revenge on anyone, when you modify the diesel engine for performance and racing they blow this smoke. It has nothing to do with politics, this is just ignorance speaking. Do a little research and you will learn when you power chip a diesel for performance you get lots of black smoke.

    • Or random road users that might even vote Republican or be apolitical that might die in an accident caused by some terminal fuckwit blowing soot in their windsheild at a critical moment!

  • California had a great program: CHIPS at highway exits with detectors for emissions. Too much black smoke and the vehicle would be pulled over for inspection. Hard to believe that a single one of these modified trucks could pass emissions inspection.

    • Some states don’t have emissions control.

  • The EPA is not putting out these regulations to protect the bunnies and hug the trees. They create these regulations to help combat the pollution that causes asthma, allergies, and cancers. Typically it’s low income neighborhoods that suffer the most from a renegade energy company who dumps whatever they want into our air because they do not have the options of “just” moving. Furthermore, the EPA are putting carbon dioxide limits on coal plants now because there isn’t a valid argument against climate change anymore. It’s happening, whether or not you live in denial. By regulating emissions of power plants and/or by choosing to drive an electric/hybrid vehicle, we’re choosing to do something about the greatest problem our species have faced. If you choose to spew soot into the air and burn as much fossil fuels as you want, just to give Obama the middle finger, you’re only fucking your own grandchildren (and mine) out of a future. Instead of facing the problem, you’re just taking the coward’s way out.If you don’t believe in climate change, or the effects of pollutants in the air on our health, then do some research. Here’s a good place to start: http://www.climate.gov/news-features/understanding-climate/global-warming-frequently-asked-questions#hide7 To fully understand the problem you may have to learn some basic chemistry. If you don’t want to invest the time to understand the problem, then you’ll just have to trust those who have spend their WHOLE LIVES studying the issue. And we’re not trying to take your big ass trucks away from you. I see no reason that someone couldn’t come up with an awesome high horsepower beast of a machine that runs on solar power that you can prop up your ego with.

  • 25 years old and he got his first diesel truck 12 years ago? Either these rednecks are giving pickup trucks to their kids or all that soot and pollution is messing with their cognitive abilities. Unless you somehow smell things other than with your nose you are breathing it into your lungs. I’m not saying there is anything inherently wrong with diesel engines, but to say that their emissions are harmless to the lungs because they sink to the ground is just patently untrue…

In fact, it is ignorant, stupid comments such as yours that are correlated to lack of intelligence. A choice of vehicle has nothing to do with intelligence, and to say so is illogical. Like the waste of rubber and the contamination of air by the rubber smoke when kids burn rubber in their cars, or God forbid, kids doing “brodies” on their bikes. Do you realize that, under President Obama’s plan to save the USA and “Save the environment” that a mere 1/20th of 1% is ALL that he will cut, in carbon dioxide, if he shuts down every coal plant in America? And a bunch of redneck kids and this ‘fad’ upsets you? Gay rights, World Peace, hunger abatement and a THOUSAND other things seem a worthier endeavor than this tripe.

      • haha, you’d both die.  but it’s not about what it emits, necessarily, but about how much it emits.  A hybrid uses less gas and thus emits less toxins and CO2.PS “(International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies diesel engine exhaust as “carcinogenic to humans,” based on sufficient evidence that it is linked to an increased risk of lung cancer, as well as limited evidence linking it to an increased risk of bladder cancer.”More info here: http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/pollution/diesel-exhaust

      • haha, you’d both die.  Diesel fuems are not nontoxic.  They contain some of the same (potentionally carcinegenic) compounds as gas, and both are combustion engine.  Meaning that both produce CO2, which is what kills people (via suffocation) when the engine is left running in an enclosed space.  Also, the point of a hybrid is not to produce a clean exhaust, it is to use less fuel overall and produce less fumes overall.  Please educate yourself before you attempt to put someone down.

    • All gasoline engines are terrible when compared to diesel. I will “diss” your hybrid’s fuel economy with Volkswagons 256mpg diesel hybrid http://gas2.org/2013/11/09/la-2013-volkswagen-announces-256-mpg-diesel-hybrid/ and laugh at the pitiful 963 hp and fact that it probably has to run on “race gas” because gasoline is very unstable. Your fuel is past technology; diesel is the fuel of the future.

  • Why is it everything a redneck does wrong? All the things we call “fun” we only get  enjoy for a short time before people decide now its bad. Not all coal rollers use it. I go to a school where 75% drive a coal roller. Most of the time its never used.

Compared to overall PM output this represents a miniscule percentage. Besides, un regulated diesel PM has only been shown to increase Lung cancer rates by 3%, and that study was done in an isolated environemnt. (underground mines)When this culture intentionally eschews pollution control, they are doing it from a reactionary position. As many emissions laws have become intrusive on the lives of those ordinary Americans, who contribute to overall emissions output thousands of times less than industry does.

  • This is the most uneducated biased article I have ever seen. Yes, there are a lot of “diesel douches” out there that give the diesel performance community a bad name. But to say that all diesel drivers that have performance upgrades are “compensating” is a mistake. Most of us thoroughly enjoy the sport and it’s just a hobby. So lay off the entire population of diesel owners you uneducated judgmental ignorant morons.

    • Do you mean you enjoy the “sport” of driving a diesel vehicle, or that you enjoy modifying your diesel to dump out unnecessary black smoke for the sole purpose of offending people? I drive a diesel and I’ve modded every car I’ve ever owned to get better performance, but I think this rolling coal nonsense is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen. Using diesel soot as a weapon to attack other people’s vehicles isn’t a hobby, it’s terrorism.

      • I enjoy the sport of driving a diesel yes. Just as someone with a muscle car enjoys it. The only difference is my horsepower has a visual side effect

    • If you don’t roll coal then don’t even worry about it, the only reason you should get offended is if you do this and if you do then your opinion is so entirely insignificant that you shouldn’t even be here talking.

You don’t protect our country by poisoning the air, using diesel soot to attack other people’s personal vehicles, and giving conservative values a bad name with your stupidity. Please refrain from trying to speak for conservative people, okay? Watching Fox doesn’t make you one.

  • Why do rednecks spend so much of their energy hating “city folk”?  I spend zero minutes a day thinking about rednecks or country folk in general and couldn’t care less what they do.  Where do their insecurities stem from?

  • Not all diesel owners are like this black smoke means unused power the true enthusiast don’t promote black smoking everywhere I and it doesn’t pollute the air soot does not rise it settles to the ground so before bad mouthing something you don’t know all the details about do more research and just FYI diesel fumes won’t kill you a Prius puts off more harmful gas’s than any diesel and for the people who love the epa the def fluid they make people run in the new diesels is worse for the environment than anything they say its fixing it’s like burning fertilizer so before you judge don’t judge a whole group I’ve some teens blowing black smoke on everybody being little pricks

  • I don’t understand, why there’s no legislation against this kind of BS, it sure would not be legal in Europe and anyone doin it would gace a hefty fine.

    • …and what does me saving my hard-earned money by owning a Toyota Prius have in common with being “a Liberal”?  I am so sick of the mentality, or lack of mental ability being displayed by people who have to lump every human being into two groups, “Liberal” and “Conservative”.  We are all both, to some degree, if we are frugal, and want to provide for our families, we are being conservative.  When we know of someone who is in need, and we have an abundance of resources (or even just a little), we are liberal.  Can’t we progress beyond labels and find out what we have in common?  I think this shows a tremendous lack of social skills, and just plain selfishness.

Racing trucks – sure.  Purposely modifying your truck to waste fuel and spew toxic smoke, and then using that toxic smoke as a weapon to attack people – not so much.  This is more akin to adolescent vandalism than any form of manly pursuit.

  • My ex-girlfriend just bought a Prius, while I drive a Silverado.  Funny that she’s the conservative and I’m the liberal, and that was actually part of the reason we broke up.  But she drives a Prius because she has to commute 30,000 miles per year and could not afford the gas any other way.  She is just trying to make her life work and it upsets me that she might have to meet jerks like these on the road.

  • First off diesel trucks now are required to use a low sulfur fuel, they polute less than one thinks and with modifications my diesel truck (1ton) is used for towing and I get 22 mpg 17 when towing. Most of the pictures displayed on this page are of trucks at the race tracks. Most if not all diesel truck forums ban any posts about coal rolling.

I drive a sports car, it doesn’t define me. It’s not who I am, I just love to drive it. It cranks out more horsepower than most trucks on the road and gets far better mileage. For those of you who don’t belive me, look up lithium mining, where they render a water supply too toxic to use for hundreds of years, or nickel mines where they cut off a top of a mountain, trees and all, and blow it up. Just to make your hybrid car battery. On top of that, all the used batteries end up as toxic waste with nowhere to actually put it. You should also,  while you’re at it, look up the collegiate study that showed the carbon footprint of making one prius was actually greater then th e carbon footprint of a land Rover discovery’s entire use able life.

So before everyone jumps down these teeny peeny boy’s thraots, please go picket an oil or chemical plant first. Or even agribusiness and all their farm equipment and chemicals. They do have on thing right. The Prius is a horrible vehicle. I personally hate them and most of the people who drive them. Thank you all. I hope you have a wonderful day :) Even if you own a Prius

  • Understand that black smoke from a diesel engine is soot and settles mainly on the ground. Next diesel is a better fuel than gasoline as it burns more completely (when one has the proper fuel injectors that allow fuel to be burnt better). Another thing is that diesel is th e most widely used fuel in the world from heavy machinery to many popular cars in Europe, Asia,  Africa and the Pacific. Next EPA regs are completely wrong on some pollutants like CO2 since the PPM for CO2 is at an all time low world wide and if the levels get any lower all plant life shuts down. So before you completely go bonkers at these people understand that “rollin’ coal” still isn’t as bad as driving a gasoline powered vehicle.

    3 Replies - Reply Now
    • You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about. Do you have a reference for CO2 at an all time low statement?

    • It is true that Diesel is a much more efficient fuel source because it burns at a much higher temperature(hence glow plugs). That does not mean it burns more complelety. That soot is unbrunt carbon, something you dont see comeing out of gasoline powered vehicles. CO2 used to be a primary concern, now cancers are linked to O3, or ozone which diesles emit a lot of. ozone in our outer atmospheres is goo, however, down at our level where we can breathe it causes cancer and other respiratory problems very quickly.

    • +
    • Ok, so you are right on 1 item.  Diesel is more efficient than gasoline. The article was about the coal rolling, not diesel.  Diesel is efficient.  Coal rolling is a waste. You are grossly misinformed if you think plant life will shut down with less CO2.  Yes, plants need CO2.  But before people and burning fossil fuels, the earth did just fine.  And WE exhale CO2 and that along with animal  breath and waste will be plenty for plant life.  And the world is doing a better job of reducing HUMAN emissions.  The world except the US.  Why should we be an exception?

      • My apologies, I didn’t mean to come across as one of those stereotypical internet “trolls”.  I don’t know how qualified you are in the diesel field, and I can’t necessarily discredit you for what you may or may not know.  However, I do know that soot emitted from diesel exhaust contains heavy metals that are indeed heavier than air, which do eventually fall to the ground.  Even so, diesel exhaust does contribute to low-level and ground level ozone pollution. The dark soot that we all see contains heavy metals and gas components, the visible components settle to the ground but will be washed away by rain and absorbed into soil and ground water. I guess the rest is up to how much you are willing to open your mind to other perspectives.  http://www.ucsusa.org/clean_vehicles/why-clean-cars/air-pollution-and-health/trucks-buses-and-other-commercial-vehicles/diesel-engines-and-public.html#Health_Impacts .

      • Even with the reduced sulfur content and less hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide, there’s still the significant problem of nitrogen dioxide. I mean, unless you like inflammed airways, fluid on the lungs, frequent respiratory infections, and decreased blood oxygen levels. You’re clearly operating under the logical fallacy that reducing harmful effects makes it safe, when I could just as easily argue that reducing a dosage of belladonna alkaloids from .2mg to .15mg makes the poison less harmful! I mean, sure, it’s not a lethal dose anymore, but I don’t think you’d like me feeding it to your kid. And, since we’re talking about overreaching negative effects, it’s not just about the bloody cars, it’s about what goes in to making your beloved biodiesel. Food prices are rising because of the production of all sorts of different biofuels. And, you may note, I’m not simply saying “oh, I know diesel”, I’m saying a wide variety of agencies have literally prepared a report for the G20 summit. But yeah, okay, you know how diesel works.

      • And…Nothing about pollution…

      • Riiiight… how about you go near them and go about your day talking, breathing, and whatever it is you seem to not understand about air.

        1 Reply - Reply Now
      • Been there, done that.  Gasoline emissions are far more harmful than diesel.  The soot from these trucks don’t suspend in the air, it’s heavier than air so it simply drops to the ground after a couple seconds.  Unlike gasoline which emits harmful CO, CO2, NX, and other pollutants which are lighter than air and bind with other simple atoms in the air.  I never said they weren’t annoying, but they don’t pollute like you think.

      • Dude coal miners die of black lung don’t tell me it’s not pollution… wow

    • Unless you’re right at the intake, it won’t work. The ether will disperse to much to do anything to the engine.Besides, diesel smoke precipitates out of the air in a very short time. It’s a different composition than gas fumes.

      1 Reply - Reply Now
      • The visible portion of the exhaust precipitates in a relatively short time..Note that this only applies to the ‘soot’ and does not consider the CO2 and other ‘non-visible’ pollutants produced by the burning of any fuel, other than hydrogen, ,whether done efficiently or otherwise…

    • Will you be providing instructions for people to follow that will allow them to use their can of ether spray on the vehicle driving in front of them so that they will be able to achieve these wonderful results????

  • The irony: those diesel trucks pollute the world far less than any Prius does.  Oh the delicious irony of that…and the fact that the author knows nothing about diesels.  Yes boys and girls, that Prius has polluted the environment more simply by being built than those diesel trucks will in 10+ years of driving.

    • They are actually polluting the air less than the Prius they hate.  That “smoke” is actually soot and it is heavier than air, so it does not suspend in the air to breathe more than 5-10 seconds, then it falls to the ground as carbon molecules, which are not harmful to plant life (in low sulfur diesel fuels).  So really, unless you happen to be on a motorcycle with no ventilation system and have one of these jackwagons “roll coal” right in your face, nobody is being harmed by it, just some hurt feelings.

    • Calling liberals regressive versus progressive is worthless unless you back it up with an argument. Its not the liberals trying to keep women subservient to men. Its not the liberals trying to dismantle the EPA to maximize profits, consequences be damned. Its not the liberals trying to restrict the LGBT community the same rights that you and I have. One of these political poles can easily be described as regressive, but it is certainly not the liberals. Next time, think before you spew.

    • I don’t remeber reading some of these statements in the article.  I think you are drawing conclusions not from what is there, but because someone disagrees with you.  The thing is, do you think your not being hypicratical yourself.  Another thing, aren’t you generalizing by calling everyone a hyporite.  Please try to refrain from this when trying to share your points.  People will not take you seriously when you act like this.  Just some friendly advice :D

      • To be fair, I can’t say I’ve ever seen a truck put out so much smoke that it completely eliminated a drivers view of the road, so to say they could potentially cause the accidental death of another human being and should be thrown in jail is to say that every person who drives could be accused of the same thing at any time.

  • I am an avid diesel enthusiast.  The general consensus (among those of us who actually prefer to use our brains from time to time) amongst us is that people who “roll coal” are what we consider to be posers. They are NOT representatives of us.  They are WANNABEs who do NOT understand the diesel world.  Diesel enthusiasts enjoy economy, torque, and utilitarianism.  Not showing off by blowing excess soot out of the tailpipe, as a result of a deliberately bad tune.

    • i’m from a rural area, i’ve seen this, and i’m really glad to hear people who are diesel enthusiasts decrying these guys. not only is it environmentally unfriendly, it’s super dangerous. i’m really glad that it’s not representative of the whole.

      • I appreciate that.  Unfortunately, the “coal rollers” (who are generally younger and less educated) have a much larger voice, and are easier to notice.  The rest of us just enjoy our trucks and try hard not to tick other people off.  I’ll never understand how being a jerk is fun.

    • Well said

  • Well for me I’m not a deisel fan but being in Louisiana have see this first person. Now I do own a truck not lifted and bone stock. But it does have a vortec 8100 which for people that don’t know that is a 496 ci 8.1 liter. Which is a gas hog its the only thing I don’t like about it.I am fixing that by going to a 511 stroker which will be emissions friendly at 650 hp and 735 torque. http://youtu.be/Z7NqORdeeik to me thats balls not blowing black smoke out your talipipe.

      • I don’t claim to know who Robbie speaks for.  I was merely pointing out that in paragraph 3 of the article someone was in fact claiming that their vehicle defines them, which is exactly what DC stated above, and to which you replied s/he was “grasping at straws.”  You were wrong.  Deal with it.

      • Hmmm, did you take the time to read the article? Says it right in there in black and white…  Let me repeat it for then you can go and match the words…”As Robbie, a 25-year-old mechanic at a diesel garage in South Carolina, puts it, “Your truck is not just something to get you from point A to point B. It’s who you are.” “

      • Yes. Robbie, the diesel mechanic .. he speaks for everyone. So logic. Much think.Very sense.WoW

      • So did you read the article.  This is a direct quote from someone interviewed in the article “Your truck is not just something to get you from point A to point B. It’s who you are.”  Are you saying he did not say it defines him when he clearly did?

      • From the article:  ’As Robbie, a 25-year-old mechanic at a diesel garage in South Carolina, puts it, “Your truck is not just something to get you from point A to point B. It’s who you are.”’

      • Oh yes, and the commenter was responding to an image in the article.  Someone made that image, presumably in earnest.  Ergo, someone thinks their vehicle defines their manhood.  I can’t believe I need to outline that.

  • I can’t lie – I’ve never heard of this until now, and it looks freakin’ awesome. I’m all about playing your part for the environment, but I totally see why people are attracted to “rollin’ coal.” Did I mention I own a Prius? And my primary transportation is a scooter that gets 80 miles to the gallon?Yeah…go ahead trolls, feel free to tear my apparent hypocrisy apart, I don’t even mind.

Mainly because if you bought a Prius thinking you are saving the environment, but haven’t taken the time to do the proper research before making this considerable purchase, you are either completely ignorant, lazy, shallow or entirely consumed by peer culture and pressure, or all the above. Embodied energy, the Prius does more damage than it can offset in it’s usable lifetime. GREENWASHING

    • Or maybe people buy a Prius so they won’t have to buy gas as often?  Just a thought.  I don’t have one.

    • +
    • I am familiar with this line of thinking, and the methodology used to come to these conclusions by several outlets is flawed. For instance, claiming that hybrids have a lifespan of only 109,000 miles, compared to over 300K for an SUV. Then there was a report that claimed Toyota’s demand for nickel was denuding landscapes, showing a picture from 30 years ago. And hybrid technology is growing quickly. I don’t think there’s any reason to dismiss out of hand cars like the Prius. I don’t drive one, and prefer my 30 year old BMW because I can actually repair it. I also agree with those who find rollin’ coal an infantile activity. “Oooh look! Smoke! KEWL Maaaannnn”!

    • It is all about image.  ”oooh look at me, I am cool and I have no idea what I am doing.”

    • Could you please site your sources?

    • Can’t I just hate both people who roll coal and people who buy priuses?

    • What a bunch of selfish, shallow-minded arseholes! It’s bad enough to pollute by driving, but to make it worse, on purpose, is moronic.

It’s silly to think that ‘oh my big truck has all this power’ but they waste about 45% of it by stressing the motor beyond what it was made to. These guys are asking for a blown motor. And that’s why you would win. rofl

    • Offroad, possibly, simply because most of these trucks are 1 ton, crew cab, long bed trucks.  Behemoths.  The compact size of yours would help offroad.  Everywhere else?  You’d lose.  Badly.  In fact, sad as it is to admit, most of those trucks would probably beat my mustang in a drag race…and it’s not slow.

  •  “kind of hard to put words on.” “It’s just fun,”What a simple mind to have no other hobbies and no vocabulary to express himself. I bet they don’t even tow or haul anything, the truck only serves as a compensation for what is lacking in their shorts and brains.

  • WHOOOO ROLL TIDE!!! I’ll show myself out…

  • I have never been more ashamed of fellow truck drivers than I am right now. We’ve had diesel trucks for over twenty years to haul our toyhauler, but we also own a Prius – Imagine that!We live in Los Angeles and it’s bad enough that the city is covered in smoke, now we have to worry about you guys polluting our air? I’m trying really hard to figure out how you could have thought this was a good idea. I’m not keen on the idea of my children getting brain damage because the only way you know to show you’re a man is by “rolling coal” – instead of oh, I don’t know – Being a man. Grow a pair and think about what you’re leaving to your children. There isn’t going to be much left of this planet if you keep this up.

Before you start judging people or stereotyping someone go back a read what the flag actually represented.

      • If you wave a traitor flag that was raised for the primary cause of preserving slavery? Yeah, you’re obviously racist.

      • Yes, just because they’re waving around the symbol of racist slave owners doesn’t mean they could possibly be racist themselves. In other news, wearing a swatchka doesn’t mean you’re racist either. • “Your truck is not just something to get you from point A to point B. It’s who you are.” No, in other words you’re just a douche bag with a small prick.

  • I know this is going to be controversial, but those trucks are actually providing food for plants to grow.  The Prius is designed beautifully and works wonders, I personally am a Toyota Master Technician.  But a vehicle that emits no CO, CO2, NOx or HC provides nothing for plants to convert into oxygen.  Simple earth science taught us all how it works.  The true zero emissions/hybrid/EV vehicles use and produce more damaging components during production than the diesel truck could ever produce “rolling coal”.

    8 Replies - Reply Now
    • Nothing controversial about it: After millions of years struggling to survive the plants should thank us that we finally invented cars about 130 years ago. It’s a miracle they survived that long without us polluting the air for them. Makes perfect sense.

    • The CO2 released by the burning of fossil fuels is just that. Released CO2 that had been burried in the ground and not a part of the ecosystem since before the dinosaurs. So by all of us burning and releasing this carbon, it not only worsens the air quality causing health problems for people and pets, it also damages the balance of the atmosphere. It’s why “eco-fuels” were a thing. Because the ethanol is from plants grown using CO2 from the air today, and doesn’t add more by burning it. Eco fuels are bad for other reasons however. Also yeah battery tech among the other manufacturing practices are indeed horrible and needs to be made better for the environment, absolutely, also hybrid cars are bad for yet other reasons. That they still enable disasters like oil spills makes them untenable.

      1 Reply - Reply Now
      • I live on the gulf coast.  Did you know the only places that are still damaged from the BP oil spill are the places that BP released cleaning agents?  the rest of the ecosystem recovered competely on its own.  See, unwater earthquakes happen all the time and open fissures on the sea floor that will allow crude oil to seep into the ocean.  this has been happening for eternity. Just because we found the oil there and messed up while extracting it, doesnt mean the ocean has no idea how to handle it. Hybrid cars dont contribute to an oil spill by any means, the technology age of the 1900s is to blame if anyhting is.  but humanity moves forward and we will find the correct way to survive.

        1 Reply - Reply Now
      • Hell Ricin exists in nature, Dan.  Why don’t you release some of it in your house and see how well you handle it?Seriously, while I agree the cleaning agents probably made things worse, a man-made leak, caused by drilling deeply into the ground and basically uncapping the leak, is a far cry from some natural releases of oil.  I’m fairly sure you don’t work for BP, but I’m guessing you or someone you’re close to works in the offshore energy production racket.

    • i think the, what, 7 billion people that are continuously deforesting and concreting can produce the C02

    • This is a ridiculous comment – plants get CO2 from humans and animals when they breathe, as well as form other air-breathing organisms. Extra CO2 doesn’t help plants, it contributes to a greenhouse effect/global warming (like on Venus – basic astronomy), ocean acidification, and carbolic acid in the water (so you’re polluting your own water supply). Keep in mind, too, that plants had been doing jsut fine for billions of years before the invention of gasoline. Not only that, but plants can only absorb so much Co2, just like we can only take in so much O2. Thre rest goes to waste (and contributes to the pollutions I mentioned above). All of this is ALSO basic Earth Science, as well as basic chemistry, and basic botany.

    • Just breathe more.

    • So you’re saying we’d better keep spewing CO2 into the environment to save it, and that it’s fine if we just pour our used motor oil into the nearest lake or stream because Ma Nature will just take care of it for us? Is this snark?

    • Okay, the earth has plenty of CO2 emissions through natural processes and certainly does not need man to add to the mix. Nature is delicate balance and mankind is disrupting that balance daily and has so for the last century.  You think CO2 is a good idea? Try taking a trip to Venus where it’s extremely dense atmosphere is 95% CO2 and the temperature at the surface is something like 900 degrees F. Greenhouse effect gone wild…

    • Kind of sad that it took so long to find someone else who actually knew what they were talking about with diesels.  Nevermind the fact that the soot is heavier than air, so it does not pollute the air, it actually falls to the ground in a matter of seconds.

  • The sad part is that diesel engines are generally more efficient than gasoline ones, they’re not inherently environmentally unfriendly. The issue with diesel pollution is largely with older engines lacking propery filtration, and the diesel used for large ships, which is the lowest grade and highest emissions. That’s why port cities tend to have severe asthma problems. Modern clean diesel vehicles are generally a good bit more efficient than their gasoline equivolent, and offer superior performance over hybrids. Even better is the as of yet unrealized hybrid diesel.

    • I aggree to some extent. However, when you want low end torque, an internal combustion engine has nothing on an electric motor. Thats why we use motors for wenches instead of small engines. Also, ask a Tesla owner about performance.

      • While you’re at it, ask Tesla owners about bricking…

      • Ask Tesla owners about the eight year unlimited warranty on the battery. Also, ask Tesla owners about how they don’t have problems getting dates.

  • As a diesel truck owner, I think its dumb. Don’t get me wrong, I like the big trucks and trucks moddified for more power, I have a properly tuned chip that works with the parts I have to make the most while being efficient and its nice to have. On the first setting, I actually get more power and mileage over stock. I have an easier and safer time merging and you can suprise the jerk in the car who is trying to cut you off. But all that smoke is unused power and wasted money. As far as the pollution, most of the particulates are very heavy and make their way to the ground pretty quick. But stacks and smoke are a signs of an immature owner most times.

  • May I also point out, this system doesn’t allow spaces between paragraphs?  It makes the read way easier… I suggest having the system modifed to allow that.

    • Apparently this site doesn’t approve any sort of accountability for standing up to their own values of journalistic integrity– instead, they ferret out the comments they don’t want (moderate them) and not take criticism.  I had a whole other message they left off, and will probably leave off in this reply.

      • Oh hey!  I can throw it in now!  Woot copy/paste!

  • What if all the sane people of this country hypothetically vowed to key every large diesel truck with smoke stacks they saw? What would that do?

    • Result in a lot of unnecessary fist fights.

    • Make a lot of hipsters hypothetically lose their teeth.

    • Nothing, know someone that’s been doing it successfully 5+ years.

    • So doing something that you don’t like, but isn’t against the law justifies vandalism…how tolerant of you.

  • let me know when you are planning to have that 4th generation inbred wedding with your sister. you guys are geniuses and we must ensure that your offspring continue to carry on this incredible gene pool.

    • Uhm. you realize that this is done by people with more money than brains right?People who are poor generally can’t afford to make these kinds of modifications. Also, how good does your bigotted behavior make you feel? Jerk

      • thanks

      • Did Hairy Guy say anything about poor people? Inbreeding and poverty are not the same thing. Though inbreeding can cause genetic deficiencies which can lead to low IQ. You just have to look at the stinking rich Feudal monarchs of Europe to see that.

    • Ahh, the city dweller whom goes to his ironic, little, “organic” grocery to buy food that magically appears on the shelves. The “4th generation inbred wedding with your sister” people are busy growing your precious greens so you can mantain your girlish figure.

      • yes i actually AM a williamsburg dwelling hipster, rotating between hanging out at SoHo and upper west side, haha. funny you hit the nail on the head. anyhow, the inbreeders aren’t doing the labor. it’s illegal mexicans and anyone else who can cross the border illegaly into america and work for pennies on the dollar as farms don’t want to pay even the minimum wage to american workers.

      • Gimme a break. Coal-burnin a-holes aren’t farmers, farmers have the brains to grow crops and get them to market and a level of respect for the earth, rain and sky that allows their crops to grow. A real farmer would never waste expensive fuel on a silly rebellious vanity like blowing a bunch of smoke around.

      • we know that but greenshield9 knows better than us. he equates having money with having less brains. go figure.

      • My truck I use to hual my equipment for farming blows smoke because I put aftermarket parts on it to get better horsepower to get better fuel mileage and less wear on my truck so I don’t have to buy a new truck every 5 years because mines to far gone to be repaired so am I a dumb inbreed hillbilly?

      • No, and nobody thinks you are. But A-holes that do it on purpose to blow diesel smoke in other peoples faces are just A-holes.

      • Says who?  Farmers can’t have hobbies?  How does that make sense?
