Same Bucket, Different Challenges
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has had so much success, other groups are using the bucket but swapping its contents to focus on other issues
The enormous success of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge can be measured not only in the dollars it has raised for the charity ($79.5 million as of Aug. 25), but also in its viral nature—everyone from Chris Pratt to Anna Wintour to your favorite auntie has braved an icy dousing.
Naturally then, there are variations like the Ice (Beer) Bucket Challenge, which compensates for California’s extreme drought by using cold brews. But increasingly, other offshoots are surfacing on Facebook and YouTube that replace ice with things like bullets, wine, sand and dirt to call attention to national and international concerns such as gun violence, the Napa Valley earthquake and the situation in Gaza.
Though the IBC is hardly original—Dorothy clearly owns one of the first buckets for change—we put together a reel of new bucket challenges trying to make a difference. And yes, that is Orlando Jones at the top:
