Which Caribbean island is not like the others? Having been a major tourist destination in the ’70s (Bill and Hillary honeymooned there), Haiti fell off the vacation map after a string of wars, epidemics, dictatorships and natural disasters. Now, as it recovers from the earthquake that rocked the country in 2010, the lesser-known half of Hispaniola just can’t catch a break. Haiti may be a tropical paradise, but it’s still on the State Department’s travel warning list. The Haitian government, on the other hand, says it’s safe and fun for Americans to visit. Vocativ went to Haiti and talked to the minister of tourism, tour guides and police to explore what a vacation in Haiti would look like.
