Boeing Wants Planes Without Pilots

A plane with no pilots?

Today at the Paris Air Show, Boeing announced that it will test autonomous technology for “pilotless” jetliners in the next year. On-board flight computers already provide some self-flying capabilities by allowing jetliners to take off, cruise, and land with minimal human assistance.

Self-piloting technology would also help meet the increasing need for pilots. A projected 1.5 million pilots will be needed over the next 20 years as global demand for air travel grows.

Now if airlines could just automate better service on the ground, too…
